I just had to giggle at the very real potential of rolling my car over with the new jack

a little comparison to my old-old jack. there was an intermediate jack of better quality/size whose seals failed. I’d been using my near worthless cheap red one for a few months since that failure, and it’s simply appalling. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

not only does it get massively higher, it also starts lower, and can reach further underneath the car. It’s better in every way... except ability to store out of the way

When I bought that one last year, it was definitely a “Where have you been all my life?” Moment. It lifts my big truck like a boss. I love that I can easily reach the rear pumpkin with plenty of room to pump. It blows away the 3-ton Craftsman jack I was using.

I’ve had this same “why did I wait so long” feeling a few times when upgrading tools. Not that it changes the fact that I can’t afford to always buy the better options when I want them.

Ryobi impact gun was a recent one that brought me great joy. Along with the jack, the wheel changes should take mere moments now :D

But getting a good quality ratchet, and ratcheting ring spanners, and so many other examples.

It occurred to me one day (when my attentive neighbour called me at work to tell me I’d left the garage door open) just how much money is invested in tools over a couple of decades of slow collecting.

Only one way to find out if it will do it or not.  My son got some play sand too stuff.  The first thing it says on the bag is to keep away from spark and open flame.  So what did I do?  I took a sample down to the basement to try to light on fire.

I’ve had a few of those little 2 ton jacks. When I bought my Galant it didn’t have enough travel to lift the car from the rear diff so I went and bought a big one. I dint get a Daytona because the nearest HF is and hour and a half away and I needed to get to work.

Yeah, cordless impact guns and good ratchets are excellent examples of that feeling. I finally took the plunge on the impact gun a couple years ago, and boy is that a game changer for swapping wheels.

I’ve been collecting tools since I was 13, and between car/bike stuff and carpentry/woodworking stuff ... I have a TON  of money tied up in them. I really should look into my home owners insurance to make sure they’re covered in case of theft.

I've always seen Daytona jacks and wondered how good they are, I'm curious how you like the handle and controls.

My first floor jack was just like that little red one. I always hated its narrow footprint. Good upgrade!

they’re well reviewed, and for the home gamer like me I suspect it will be well more than suitable.

controls seem good, has a foot pedal for minor adjustment, the large handle does big lifts well. and twist to lower is easy to control.

I have never been disappointed with my harbor freight jack. I have an older longboi one from when it was still pittsburgh i think, but it’s the lowpro hi-rise 2 ton. Zero issues, zero concerns, zero fuss, always works. Now that I have a big dumb truck, I’ll be buying the orange one pictured.

it’s the long reach low profile option (available in a few colours)

https://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-long-reach-low-profile-professional-rapid-pump-floor-jack-orange-64241.html

which has slightly lower and higher specs than the snap-on replica which is ~$10 more.

https://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-low-profile-super-duty-rapid-pump-floor-jack-63183.html

and higher and lower reach than the cheaper regular daytona

https://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-professional-rapid-pump-floor-jack-orange-64200.html

I would guess that the regular daytona is perfectly suitable for most home usage for ~$80 less than the one I chose

I currently use a jack like your old one and I’ve had it in my mind to replace it for so long... I’m definitely feeling some envy. Maybe this year will be the year.

I picked out and let my wife buy me nearly the same jack (not the long reach, but the low profile, in black) for Christmas since I nearly died hacking apart my Esprit when it fell off the shitty little jack (similar to yours) that I bought at Sears like 20 years ago (came with jack stands, neat).

Shit, its still sitting unwrapped (never tried) under our tree.

I’ve not needed to use mine for anything real yet, but had to lift my car just for lols immediately.
I also lifted my daughter, who thought it was hilarious to sit on it :D

I have no need at the moment, as my project car is still on its rotisserie, and the daily’s are under warranty and my lazy ass pays someone to do my oil changes and rotates .

But when there was nothing else I needed around the holidays, it made the perfect gift for when I am eventually going to need it.

Plus I got to go to a Harbor Freight store for the first time (usually I order online) and smell the cheap tools.

it’s a dangerous store, one usually walks out with at least a few throw away tools one didn’t plan to acquire.

at the very lease, a package of zip-ties

I tried Very Hard to add on some last minute gifts, but the wife was not interested at all. “Should have put it on your list” is all she would reply.

my last civic was low enough that only the factory jack could get under it easily. So it is indeed nice to have a jack that gets lower than even the factory scissor jack could

Can never have too many tools. But really, if you look at it from the perspective that if you had to send your car off to a mechanic you’d spend a lot more than the  cost of the tools.  And it’s nice to be able to fix things yourself with good tools.

I thought my older one was a 3 ton, but alas. And with the new truk weighing 5000 lbs, a 3 ton was in order.
